Maketo was born in the Aeroporto neighborhood of Maputo, Mozambique during the mid 1970's. His neighborhood is renowned for producing artists and he was exposed to art from an early age. During adolescence, Maketo first became involved in painting by producing portraits of famous figures, such as Bob Marley and Michael Jackson. He then progressed to producing batiks, which are traditional paintings that use recycled denim as a make-shift canvas. Maketo's progression as an artist continued by utilizing more traditional materials to create his works, such as oils an acrylic paints. He describes his formation as an artist as a continual process of study. "I developed my own style by studying the works of other artists. I constantly challenge myself to speculate on why an artist chooses a certain juxtaposition of colors or uses certain proportions in his works." With respect to themes, he strives to produce works that are universally accessible to a broad range of audiences, such as the social role of music or the beauty of the female figure. Producing art fulfills diverse needs, on both a personal and family level. "Studying and producing art demands that I continually challenge myself to think in new ways. It also gives me the means to build my house and send my children to school."
Maketo's artwork will be on display at the Exibition at the Corner Store in Washington, DC from December 12th to December 20th.
