Artist's Bio - Mr. Alfred Ng'ang'a Kimani was born on March 4th 1975 in Nairobi, Kenya. He comes from a family of six and was raised in Thika Town, a suburb of Nairobi. In this painting, ships are docked along the shores of Lamu Island, part of the Lamu Archipelago off the coast of Kenya. Fishing is the livelihood of many on Lamu Island and serves as a means of both income and sustenance. Boats are the only way of transport to and from the island, as there are no bridges to the mainland. The island is home to both Islamic and Swahili cultures; several of the people depicted are wearing traditional garb.
