Light and dark earthy tones make up the stone walls and street, while a colorful figure is depreciated in the foreground walking down the street. Another figure rides a bicycle in the background, a very popular form of transportation in the village. In this painting, ships are docked along the shores of Lamu Island, part of the Lamu Archipelago off the coast of Kenya. Fishing is the livelihood of many on Lamu Island and serves as a means of both income and sustenance. Boats are the only way of transport to and from the island, as there are no bridges to the mainland. The island is home to both Islamic and Swahili cultures; several of the people depicted are wearing traditional garb.
