Gumatsy was born in 1968 in the Aeroporto neighborhood of Maputo, Mozambique. During early adolescence, Gumatsy began painting with his uncle, who is the internationally acclaimed painter Malangatana. Spending time painting at Malangata's studio provided an escape from Gumatsy's occasionally tumultuous home life. "Painting was, and continues to be to this day, a therapeutic activity for me." During later years, Gumatsy gained formal training in art and earned a degree in visual arts. Gumatsy's works convey the melancholic hardships endured by Mozambicans, but also depict the inspiration stemming from quotidian social interactions. "In my art, I express the world of my neighborhood. When I walk outside my house, I see women selling things and children playing... These are the images, emotions and realities I capture in my works." Uniquely portraying the female form is also a recurring theme among his works. Gumatsy's passion for introducing young people to art has led him to teach as a professor in the Escola Nacional de Artes Visuais (The National Institute for Visual Arts). He primarily teaches teenage students and comments that he "particularly enjoys teaching adolescents because of their openness to experimenting with new ideas and devoting themselves to developing their artistic abilities." Gumatsy's works have been shown in galleries and expositions in Portugal, South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique.
Gumatsy's artwork will be on display at the Exibition at the Corner Store in Washington, DC from December 12th to December 20th.
